What to do in Amboise

The Loire Valley region has many facets, but the town of Amboise alone is the grimoire that holds some of the most beautiful and sumptuous pages of French history.

The town of Amboise boasts twenty-five listed buildings. In addition to the world-famous monuments and châteaux, Amboise is home to other treasures such as the XVᵉ Tour de l’Horloge, the house of the pages of Charles VII, the Pagode de Chanteloup

Visitors love to stroll through the narrow streets of Amboise town center, in the shade of timber-framed houses or along the banks of the Loire River.

Amboise is also the burial place of the most famous Italian of the Renaissance, the master Leonardo da Vinci, who made a major contribution to the town’s renown.

Visit the Château d’Amboise

At the very heart of the city, the Château Royal d’Amboise overlooks the small town wisely aligned on the banks of the Loire. From Charles VII to François Iᵉʳ, via Louis XII, it is today one of the most remarkable achievements of Renaissance style on our territory.

Home to the tomb of Leonardo da Vinci, the Château d’Amboise is also worth a visit for its incredible heritage of furniture. This ancient medieval fortress, transformed over the centuries, is open to visitors all year round. The château and its gardens are open to visitors all year round, from 9:00 am to 6:30 pm, with the exception of December 25 and January 1ᵉʳ. Tours are also accessible to people with reduced mobility.

What to do around Amboise?

The many other Loire châteaux(Chambord, Azay le Rideau, Blois, Brézé, Chenonceau, Cheverny, Loches…) in the vicinity of Amboise should not obscure the fact that you are in the heart of a wine-growing region, that of the Loire Valley. Wine tourism is increasingly taking its place alongside traditional tourism. Here, the caves are troglodytic, and deserve special attention.

Another major tourist attraction is the Beauval zoo, one of the five most beautiful zoos in the world. A remarkable animal experience to discover some endangered species, as well as baby pandas.
